Rathmore B wins O’Sullivan Cup

Rathmore won the 2012 East Kerry O'Sullivan Junior Championship following a close encounter with Glenflesk at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 26th August 2012

A Goal by John Friel in the tenth minute gave Rathmore a lead that they never relinquished. On the numerous occasions Glenflesk got to within a point of the victors, but despite Trojan work were unable to overhaul the victors.

J.B. O' Donoghue fired over the first point for Glenflesk straight from forty metres. Rathmore swept upfield, led by full back Daniel O'Sullivan, and centre back Brendan O'Keeffe levelled the game at 0-02 apiece. The crucial score of the game happened in the tenth minute.

Rathmore full-back Daniel O'Sullivan attacked up field. The ball was moved smartly to midfielder Tommy Kelleher and on to full-forward Sean O'Riordan who got the ball to corner- forward John Friel. Friel powered through the defence to hit the Glenflesk net for the game's only goal. However two well struck frees and a point from play by Brian O'Donoghue had Glenflesk back level 0-05 to 1-02 mid-way through the half.

Sean O'Riordan and Brian O'Donoghue swapped points and the side remained level. Approaching half time Rathmore keeper Donough McSweeney spilled the ball under pressure from Brian O'Donoghue, but full-back Daniel O'Sullivan was on the line to prevent O'Donoghue's shot entered the net. A Patrick Reen point separated the sides at half-time - Rathmore 1-04 Glenflesk 0-06.

Rathmore introduced John Hickey and Michael A. Kelleher at half time. A strong run up the middleby Daniel O'Sullivan saw Hickey accept the leather and slot over a fine point. Five minutes later O'Sullivan did a reprise of hie attacking run from full back this time getting the ball to substitute Kelleher who put Rathmore three points clear. Brian O'Donoghue and GavinKelley hauled back the lead to a single point before a dashing 50 metre solo run by Michael A. Kelleher saw him punch a point from close in.

A free by Jeremy Moynihan had reached Brian O'Donoghue who moved the ball to Gavin Kelly and Kelley duly pointed 1-07 to 0-09 in Rathmores favour with five minutes left to play. Following the departure of Glenflesk centre back Christopher Crowley due to injury, Rathmore centre forward Patrick Reen finished the Rathmore scoring with a fine point . Glenflesk had two more promising attacks, they came to naught as Rathmore held on to win by the smallest margin Rathmore 1-08 Glenflesk 0-10.
