Firies

played 3rd Dec 1995

The footballers of Firies tasted glory in Fitzgeald Stadium, Killarney on Sunday when they won the Sullivan Cup by comprehensively beating Cordal.

The game, which was played as a curtain raiser to Sunday's East Kerry' SF championship final (O'Donoghue Cup) between Dr Crokes and Glenflesk saw the Firies men turn on the style in a big way against a Cordal outfit that did not live up to expectations. Indeed, the game was over as a contest at the halfway stage, at which stage Firies enjoyed a lead of 2-9 to 0-2.

Throughout their campaign for O'Sullivan Cup honours Firies have consistently played attacking football and their performances last Sunday did not deviate from this pattern. They harried their opponents and ran into scoring positions. They didn't submerge Cordal, in the first quarter, but they still pulled clear by 0-5 to 0-1. with Cordal’s solitary point coming from a free by Tom O'Connor in the seventh minute.

The pressure being applied by, Firies could only lead to further scores and in the 20th minute came a hammer-blow to Cordal when the left ha1f-forward for Firies, Jeremiah O'Sullivan, combined with full-forward Burke to put 4O yards man Jerry O'Sullivan through for a well taken goal.

Points for Firies followed from Thomas Corbett and Jeremiah O'Sullivan before, in the 28th minute, Cordal registered their second score of the opening ha1f and that also a point from a free by Tom O'Connor. The death knell sounded for Cordal before half-time when Firies' top scorer, Michael. Allen, crashed home his side's second goal, following a long ball from midfielder Donal Daly. This left a gap of 13 points between the sides (2-9 to 0-2).

Although Cordal were first to score in the second when Tom O'Connor was again on, target following a foul on centre half-back Tom. Brosnan, their revival was short-lived.Firies continued to pick off points ,and in the 50th minute the game was put irretrievably beyond the reach of Cordal when Firies substitute Tommy Brosnan fired home his side’s third goal. Full time score Firies 3-15 Cordal 0-8
