Firies

played 26th Nov 2000

Favorites Firies, duly won the O'Sullivan Cup on Sunday Morning last, but they will be first to admit that their five point winning margin flattered them in a big way.

Cordal it was who got off to a better start, going two points clear within five minutes thanks to two points by free taker Tommy O'Connor. A wasteful Firies side were on level terms by the end of the first quarter with two pointed frees by Jeremiah O'Sullivan, who was to prove their most influential player all through.

Two further points by O'Sullivan saw the side lead by double scores, 0-4 to 0-2 at the interval, and had O'Sullivan availed of a gilt-edged goaling chance in the final minute of the half . Mike Courtney brought off a fine save Firies lead would have been even greater.

Jerry O'Sullivan extended the Firies lead on the changeover, but Cordal fought back with points by James O'Donoghue and Tommy O'Connor and when Eamon John O’Donoghue picked out Tommy O’Mahony for a fine goal in the sixth minute Cordal took a two-point lead.

The O'Sullivans, with a point each, had Firies back on level terms and from this to the end the game ebbed and flowed in either direction. A draw looked to be on the cards when Firies had a number of bad wides, but substitute Dermie Foley gave them the lead in the final minute of normal time.

Cordal fought back to level with a point by Tommy O’Connor in added time and extra time was looming when Dermie Foley first gave Firies the lead with another point and then sealed the issue in the fourth minute of injury time when he took a pass from Jeremiah O'Sullivan and gave Mike Courtney no chance in the Cordal goal. Full time score Firies 1-12, Cordal 1-07.

Jeremiah O'Sullivan, with six points to his credit, was certainly the hero for Firies and it was fitting that he should receive the O’Sullivan Cup (named in honour of his uncle Owen) from the board chairman, Pat Sweeney, and Killarney Oils representative James O'Donoghue.
