Kilcummin

played 11th Sept 1983

Bill Fleming hadn't seen Kilcummin Seniors play for the past two score years, but he celebrated with the young and old of the Parish on Sunday last when Kilcummin beat Fossa by 9 points to 5 in the 0' Sullivan Cup final at The Park. Their last Senior success was in 1977 when they beat Spa also in the 0' Sullivan Cup final.

Play was even enough in the first half with Fossa at their best. James Houlihan was in splendid form at full back and their half forward line of Ronan Long, Pat Sheahan and Donie Foley, also shone.

However, they were held to level scoring at half time, two points each. Fossa forged ahead 4 points to 2 in the 40th minute but Kilcummin were the masters in the last 20 minutes. Their three substitutes worked like a dream. At half time Danny Mc Carthy came on for Jimmy Divane. In the 50th minute Dinny Connor replaced Sean Kelly and Pat 0' Connor substituted for Pat 0' Connell. Pat 0' Connor moved to full forward and curbed James Houlihan.

Kilcummin squared the scoring at 4 - 4 but Fossa were never quite as effective when Ronan Long had to go off after a heavy collision with Michael Doolan. They did add one point but Kilcummin finished in style by adding 5 points without reply. Mike 0' Connor (Kilcummin) who scored three points from frees and two from play won the Man of the Match Award.
